  • cap is slippery or sticky when moist
  • underside of cap has yellowish pores
  • stem has a prominent sheathing ring
  • white stem is brown-dotted above ring
  • pores and flesh do not discolor when cut

Look-alikes in Ontario

A number of species of Suillus with sticky/tacky caps are superficially similar, none of which are known to be poisonous. They differ in that they do not match all the key characteristics, and in particular they lack the sheathing ring that is initially white, then purplish.
